Why do I need a portrait of myself?

I recently had a conversation with a woman about our portrait sessions.  During this conversation, she said to me “Why do I need a portrait of myself” and “What would I do with all of them?”.  Now obviously, as a portrait photographer, I am obsessed with capturing my humans, big and small and I think nothing of having my portrait taken.  But why is it important to me?

That got me to thinking….

  1.  The most obvious and important reason I have my portrait taken, is that one day I will not be here.  My children will want to see me when I can no longer be present in their lives.  They will cherish every photograph ever taken of me and more than likely will display photos of our short time together in their homes to share with their families.  Just like every woman out there, I too have weight to lose but I put on my big girl panties and have my portrait taken because I know that one day that photo will be the most important possession to my children.  I refuse to let my insecurities deprive them of that.
  2.  I have my portrait taken because I am loved.  The humans in my home want to see pictures of me on the wall.  I share my portraits with my loved ones and family because they also want to see portraits of me.  I think we tend forget that sometimes, the portrait is not just about us.
  3. I have my portrait taken because it makes me feel good.  Who doesn’t enjoy seeing a beautiful portrait of themselves.  It is proof that I am good enough and beautiful and I deserve it (extra weight and all)!!

So next time you ask yourself “Why do I need a portrait of myself”, my response will be “Why wouldn’t you!!”

Exist in photos. Exist in your loved ones’ lives.  Today, tomorrow, for always.
