When I think about school photography, I shudder. As a mom and a photographer, it pains me year after year to purchase images of a little person that resembles my child yet I don’t recognize, but I do it. It is a right of passage and well, I really have no other choice. I purchase a package that is as close to what I need and then it sits in the back of my closet with all the other lost articles of our daily life.
Last year, I was asked to do take some head shots for my daughter’s pre-school class, my gut reaction was no. I am not a school photographer, I do not want to take lifeless images that will sit in back of someone’s closet. Then I learned that I don’t have to follow suit and create the same portraits that have been created year after year, for decades. I can actually do something different. Something more personal. Something that will actually make it into a frame or hang on the wall.
I have learned how to offer custom, boutique school portraiture and I am in LOVE!
Coast Mountain Academy, which is a school that prides itself for being unique and thinking outside the box, contracted me to shoot their school photos this year and I am so happy with the images captured. Their students are creative and innovative and just plain amazing. I cannot wait to come back in September!
