Hansel & Grethel

“They began to walk again, but they always got deeper into the forest, and if help did not come soon, they must die of hunger and weariness. When it was mid-day, they saw a beautiful snow-white bird sitting on a bough, which sang so delightfully that they stood still and listened to it. And when it had finished its song, it spread its wings and flew away before them, and they followed it until they reached a little house, on the roof of which it alighted; and when they came quite up to little house they saw that it was built of bread and covered with cakes, but that the windows were of clear sugar. “We will set to work on that,” said Hansel, “and have a good meal. I will eat a bit of the roof, and thou, Grethel, canst eat some of the window, it will taste sweet.” Hansel reached up above, and broke off a little of the roof to try how it tasted, and Grethel leant against the window and nibbled at the panes. Then a soft voice cried from the room,

“Nibble, nibble, gnaw,
Who is nibbling at my little house?”

The children answered,

“The wind, the wind,
The heaven-born wind,”

~ The Brothers Grimm, 1812

Winter

We are barely into Spring and Winter feels like it is still desperately hanging on.  A desperation similar to when a mother tries to pry a toy from the clutches of a tired child at nap time.

I have lived in this area my entire life and our rainy, dark winters are nothing new to me but this year, ugh – let’s just say that I am ready, I mean really ready for some warmer, sunnier days.

Time to put the toy away Winter, it is well past your nap time!

Winter hung on too long here in MN, too, so I know the feeling. But you did a wonderful job using the landscape to your advantage here. Love these!

A Fellow Photographer

For an oh so brief moment last weekend, the sun poked it’s head out and gave us a few hours of bliss after what seemed like an eternity of winter blah. I immediately wanted to get out and play with my camera but unfortunately, my children don’t always share the same excitement. So to entice my youngest to join me in some fun, I gave her a camera of her own. While it only bought me ten minutes of shooting time, it was still great to get out in the sun and shoot just for me.

MeganFebruary 15, 2013 - 8:45 am

What a sweet session. I really love the soft processing here – it really adds to the whole timeless feel.

How NOT to photograph your own kids….

The other day we had the most glorious weather and I decided to take my girls out for a photo shoot. It was an epic fail!! I usually never have any real problems photographing my own children even though they practically live in front of the camera but this day I practically layed out the silver platter for disaster. So if you are looking to have a photo shoot with your child that is filled with tears and misery than just follow these simple steps:

1. Take your kids on a really long, high energy play date with their favourite buddies – make sure that the play date runs at least 2+ hours;

2. Just in case the play date was not enough, walk to the location the long way (oh, and be sure to invite the play date friends along);

3. Arrive at the location you have chosen without having a clue what the light is going to be like, then proceed to stand around waiting for the light to get better (this really helps speed up boredom);

4. DO NOT FEED THEM LUNCH;

5. Remove the kids jackets and push past the usual ten minutes of shooting – freeze the children; and finally

6. After thoroughly freezing your children, offer up tons of bribes which include things like small ponies because you still have a ten minute walk back to the car!

Thankfully, after putting up with all my requests, my children came away from this process relatively unharmed and still gave me some great shots. Bless their little hearts.

Happy Tuesday!!

April O'HareJanuary 17, 2013 - 2:39 pm

The Best of 2012

I love doing my year end “Best of” blog post. It gives me a chance to re-visit all the great sessions I was fortunate enough to shoot. It also gives me a chance to reflect on how I have grown as a photographer and plan for areas I want to further grow in the upcoming year. This year was especially tough to narrow down my Top 12 of 2012 because I had so many beautiful subjects but these images speak to my heart in some way or another. I hope you enjoy my Best of 2012!!

April O'HareDecember 28, 2012 - 6:19 pm

Oooh, I love when photographers do their end of the year favorite images post:) I think you have a nice mix of solemn and serious with happy in these images. And they all have beautiful color and light in them!

Michelle PontiniDecember 29, 2012 - 8:30 am

Corrie, from one mom to another, thank you for helping me achieve a dream photo of my family. With everyone getting older and slowly moving into the comfort of their lives our family gatherings are getting fewer and harder to achieve. But right Infront of me behind our table is a moment in time captured for always. It is a moment I will cherish for always.

Thank you,
Mish
